Catch up: Remember the Urumqi massacre. Fight for Uyghur rights & freedoms.

Our online event on 5 July, commemorating the 11th anniversary of the unrest in Urumqi and the massacre of Uyghur protesters that followed, heard eyewitness testimonies from people who were at the scene in 2009, and wide-ranging discussion about the struggle today.

The Chinese state claims that its clampdown in East Turkestan is a counter-terrorism operation – in truth, it’s about keeping a firm grip on a territory that is crucial for its economic empire-building plan, the “Belt & Road Initiative”.

The persecution of the Uyghur people by the Chinese state continues and has deepened in the coronavirus crisis. In place of our usual monthly protest at the Chinese embassy in London, on 5 April we gathered online to discuss the situation with a range of campaigners. Coronavirus, China & the Blame Game

A statement from the Uyghur Solidarity Campaign UK

Amidst the pandemic crisis, we have seen propaganda efforts by states, politicians and press to promote their own image and scapegoat others. The Chinese government and its press and supporters boast that they are leading the world against the virus. Other governments, especially in the UK and US, are deflecting blame for their own shortcomings onto China.
